Happy New Year

Yesterday, everybody smoked his last cigar, took his last drink and swore his last oath. Today, we are a pious and exemplary community. Thirty days from now, we shall have cast our reformation to the winds and gone to cutting our ancient shortcomings considerably shorter than ever. ~Mark Twain

People are so worried about what they eat between Christmas and the New Year, but they really should be worried about what they eat between the New Year and Christmas. ~Author Unknown

New Year's eve is like every other night; there is no pause in the march of the universe, no breathless moment of silence among created things that the passage of another twelve months may be noted; and yet no man has quite the same thoughts this evening that come with the coming of darkness on other nights. ~Hamilton Wright Mabie

A happy New Year! Grant that I
May bring no tear to any eye
When this New Year in time shall end
Let it be said I've played the friend,
Have lived and loved and labored here,
And made of it a happy year.

Merry Christmas Tyler

Tyler got a Mule for Christmas

A Sunnie Christmas Story

Last week three days before Christmas Sunnie brought me a game piece that was a multi-sided die with letters of the alphabet on it. When rolled or dropped one letter would be on top. Sunnie wanted to make up a game to play, so we started rolling the dice and then thinking up three words about Christmas that started with the letter we rolled. We went through several letters fairly easily, and then I rolled an A. I said "angels"and then went blank. I said, "Sunnie, I'm stumped, what begins with an A concerning Christmas? With very little hesitating Sunnie said, "how about ache?" I wasn't sure that I heard right. "What did you say?" She replied, "you know, ache, like when you're aching for Christmas to get here."

Christmas Quotes

In the old days, it was not called the Holiday Season; the Christians called it 'Christmas' and went to church; the Jews called it 'Hanukkah' and went to synagogue; the atheists went to parties and drank. People passing each other on the street would say 'Merry Christmas!' or 'Happy Hanukkah!' or (to the atheists) 'Look out for the wall!' ~Dave Barry, "Christmas Shopping: A Survivor's Guide"

Oh, for the good old days when people would stop Christmas shopping when they ran out of money. ~Author Unknown

Sunnie's Christmas Brunch

Sunnie had some friends over Saturday for a Christmas brunch. They were all dressed up and had lots of fun. Ronnie read them a semi-original Wolfhill Tale. After brunch they opened up the beautiful ornaments they had brought to share with their friends. This little Christmas party is beginning to be a tradition. Pretty little girls all dressed up and really LOUD. Merry Christmas girls.

Mom and Dad's Anniversary

The Day After The Day of Infamy

Mom and Dad were married on December eighth, nineteen fifty one. Since Pearl Harbor Day was the day before, it should have been easily remembered. It was… for Mom. For some reason Dad had a mental block about it. As much as he loved Mom, that was the one thing that he just could not remember. He was almost, you might say, faithful to forget about it.

Dad was the Sunday School superintendent for several years at our church. One of the traditions at that time was that the superintendent made announcements to the congregation between Sunday School and the Church Service. Among the announcements that were made was to ask if anyone had a birthday or anniversary during the preceding week. On one particular Sunday, that just happened to be December eighth, Dad faithfully asked the congregation if any had had a birthday, or an anniversary. Mom sat in the pew gritting her teeth, wondering if anyone else in the church was going to remember and remind Dad.

When Doris and I were grown, we took it upon ourselves to remind Dad at least the day before that his anniversary was upon him. Mom began to get cards and gifts from Dad, for which she always thanked us.

Okie in a Winter Wonderland

Lake Effect Snow Watch in effect from late tonight to Friday afternoonThe National Weather Service in Cleveland has issued a lake effect snow watch, which is in effect from late tonight through Friday afternoon.A fast moving clipper will approach Northwest Pa. today bringing more lake effect snow to most locations by early Thursday morning. The snow will begin late tonight and continue through the day on Thursday with anywhere from 4 to 8 inches of snow possible by Thursday evening. Winds will become Northwesterly Thursday evening allowing additional lake effect snow from Lake Huron to affect Northwest Pa. through Friday.Additional accumulation of 5 to 7 inches will be possible Thursday night bringing storm total accumulation to over a foot in most locations.-- National Weather ServiceFor more information, visit http://www.erieweather.com/ Last changed: December 06. 2006 9:11AM

The above forecast is for the area where my cousin once removed has moved to. She lived and worked for several years in northwest Arkansas and I am afraid she has been overcome by a malady that sometimes affects Texans and Okies who stay too long a little too far north of the Red River. It almost happened to Becky and me when we lived in Missouri for three years. We actually began to talk about buying property up there.

It has something to do with being deprived of the ultra low frequency waves of common sense that emanate from the Texas soil. After extended absence from this most needed force, the northern climes can begin to seem normal, and acceptable. Once this safeguard of Texas Force is lost, often the victim will range even further north with no regard to the obvious warnings of mother nature to turn back to the south.

So, after a few years in Arkansas, she has now moved to a place where when the wind blows out of the west a foot of snow falls. She writes for a newspaper up there, and I read some of her ramblings ever so often. Even though she has been away from this area for an extended time, she comes home often enough to keep most of her wits about her, and compared to the poor souls born and raised in the north, and entirely devoid of the benefit of Texas Force, she is a beacon of light in the cold darkness.

Mom - Comfort Food - & Sunnie Kay

This is a picture of Becky, Mom, and me that we submitted with our Dossier to China. The picture of Sunnie is one that was taken last year when she was all dressed up for an important job. As class favorite for her kindergarten class she got to carry the flowers for the Homecoming Queen. Sunnie really loves to get dressed up.

Sunday morning Sunnie came over early to get ready for church. We have been having some cold weather and she was all bundled up. I made her some cinnamon toast and hot cocoa. It brought back memories of when we first moved out to Wolfhill. The old farmhouse was pretty drafty. Mom and Dad heated only the living room, kitchen, and bathroom. The bathroom was isolated on the south end of a screened in porch.

Mom was serving my sister Doris and me “comfort food” long before the term was coined. We liked the cold weather because it inspired Mom to produce more comfort food. The colder the morning, the more determined Mom was that when we got on the school bus we were warm, full, and content. Mom made hot chocolate from scratch, and used a little condensed milk to give extra richness. A couple of big marshmallows were added, which would finally melt down to a soft mush in the bottom of the cup. She made cinnamon toast, French toast, and sometimes pancakes. Gravy and biscuits were often served, but we could count on the sweet stuff after a cold norther. We were blessed in the fact that Mom did not have to work outside the home and she made taking care of her family first priority.

Happy Birthday Tyler

November and December are busy birthday months on Wolfhill. Tyler had a birthday yesterday December 2. We celebrated today since he was feeling bad yesterday.

Tyler, Ronnie, Cousins Sunnie and Casey were having lots of fun with Tyler's new "Horseopoly" game that Grandma Ball gave him.

The cake was very cute, another Bull Riding Cake!! Jeff and Bethany gave Tyler 4 different PBR Bullriding sets. Misty used one set on the cake. Tyler did open that gift yesterday since Bethany had been hinting to him for months about what the gift was and he just could not wait any longer.

Also helping Tyler celebrate his birthday were brother Caleb and cousins Bradley, Ben, Sunnie, Tristan, Shayna, Robert and Casey.

We love you Tyler and are so proud of you. Happy 10th Birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Referrals are arriving at Adoption Agencies today!! The CCAA matched through September 8, 2005 Log In Date for this month. We are getting closer!!! If the current trend continues we should be getting our information about our "Little China Girl" in May or June. It is possible that it may not be that long but it could be even longer. We are committed...the long wait will be a distant memory when we hold our
little girl safely in our arms.

Has anyone heard the song Merry Christmas by Third Day? If not I recommend it. The whole CD is wonderful (Third Day Christmas Offerings)... Merry Christmas is very special to me.

Christmas Lights

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas on Wolfhill. Carmen and John are always the first to put up their decorations and tree. This is the first year they have put lights on the dormers because the roof is very steep. Recently John climbed up to fix the satellite dish in really windy weather to keep from missing an important ballgame, so Carmen decided he could manage to put up Christmans lights. Good job John.

I decided to eliminate outside lights after the new colored lights I bought a few years ago turned white because Ronnie left them on the house for 3 years in a row. Each year I would hint...we (meaning Ronnie) really need to get those lights down. Ronnie would nod and when Christmas rolled around again he would plug them up and they would work! This year I'm putting lights around the inside of my windows so I can take them down myself.

We are Thankful

God has blessed us with five precious grandchildren (and we are praying for number six).

We are Thankful for our family. Misty, Wade, Carmen, John, Bethany, Jeff, and our grandchildren are a blessing to us each day.

We are also Thankful for Our Little China Girl, who is waiting for us in China. (We have not decided on an American name for her yet). We are hoping to have her home by this next summer.

We are Thankful for our parents. We have many precious memories of my Daddy, my Mom, and Ronnie's Dad. We love and pray for Ronnie's Mom and my Step-Dad each day. We are so blessed to have them in our lives.

We are Thankful for our extended family.

We are Thankful for the Gift of Salvation.

We are Thankful for our Church, Harvest Time Assembly of God.

We are Thankful for our Freedom

We are Thankful that we live in America.

And I am Thankful for Ronnie...my best friend and the love of my life.

Happy Thanksgiving

CSI Wolfhill

One night back in the late summer I (Ronnie) had just gone to bed. Becky walked in with a container of packaged pudding in her hand and a very perplexed and concerned look on her face. “What is it”? I said. “Ronnie, this pudding has been tampered with”! “In what way”? I reply, trying to be calm and matter of fact in the face of Becky’s obvious intent to panic. “Look” she says, “there are dozens of little holes in the covering.” Sure enough, I looked and saw at least 20 or more holes punched all around the plastic or foil covering.

“Did you eat any yet?” “No, but what worries me is that Sunnie ate one just before she went home half an hour ago”, Becky replied. Well, now I began to be a little more concerned. Becky had looked at the 4 remaining pudding cups and each one had 10 to 20 holes in them. Sunnie we assumed had been the first to open the six packs by removing the cardboard cover. Becky retrieved the cardboard cover out of the trash can and found no holes in it. “It must have happened in the factory on the assembly line”, I said, “before the outer covering was put on”. This theory didn’t set well with Becky. By her estimation, if that was the case, the pudding would surely be spoiled and full of botulism by now. We applied the sniff test and it seemed like the pudding smelled just as bland and flavorless as perfectly fresh packaged pudding.

By this time Becky had called John, Sunnie’s dad, asking him if she showed any signs of sickness. She was asleep and Becky asked John to look closely at her or maybe wake her to be sure she didn’t have a stomach ache. “We may have to take her and get her stomach pumped”, Becky announced. “That’s a little drastic, don’t you think?” I retorted. “Well, I mean if she acts sick in any way, or we can’t find out for sure what happened. There could be some drug or poison in the pudding”. I knew now that this mystery had to be solved fast, or my poor little granddaughter had a long night ahead of her.

We put all the pudding cups on the bar and looked closely at them. I couldn’t imagine any scenario in a factory that would put holes like that in them, but what do I know about mass produced pudding. After closer examination, I did see that the holes seemed to be in pairs of holes that were evenly spaced, as if a two pronged object had punctured the seal numerous times. There seemed to be no other pattern evident. “Becky, what do we have in the house that might make a pair of holes spaced about 3/16 of an inch apart?” She drew a blank. “Are you thinking one of the grandkids might have punched the holes?” she said. “Well, maybe. Ever so often a kid does something totally inexplicable”, I mused. I looked at the holes again, and I had a thought. “Do we still have some of those little corn-on-the-cob holders?” “Yeah, right here in this drawer” and Becky brought out 5 or 6 of the little yellow plastic and two-pronged handles shaped like little ears of corn.

I took one and lined it up with 2 of the holes. A perfect fit. I tried it on several holes, a perfect match each time. Becky’s eyes lit up and she started examining each of the holders. “There’s no sign of pudding on any of them.” She said. She looked in the sink and then came back and opened the drawer farther. Back toward the back she found one more, and holding it up we could see the telltale pudding residue on the two prongs. Becky went to the phone and called John to give him the all clear. “Do you think Sunnie did it? Tyler was in there about the same time that Sunnie was.” I wondered. “I really think Tyler has about outgrown these kinds of stunts, but I can tell when I ask them by their reaction.” Becky replied.

The next day Sunnie came in a little while after Becky got home from work. Becky went to the refrigerator and got out a pudding snack pack. She called Sunnie into the kitchen and said, “Sunnie, we found little tiny holes in these pudding packs. Do you have any idea what might have caused it?” And my poor little granddaughter didn’t say a word, but her eyes told all that we needed to know. Another case solved by CSI Wolfhill.

Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear...Hebrews 11:3
Something to think about:

Have you noticed how fearful our news media seems to be here in America? Right now, the focus is on the upcoming elections, but think about some of the reporting in the last few years. Whatever happened to bird flu? A little over a year ago it was poised to decimate the world’s population with a pandemic after it morphed into human to human infection capability. I wonder has it stopped occurring or has the media just lost interest?

We have gone through several phases of fearful forecasts of climate change. Last year after a near record hurricane season, you would have thought that surely most of coastal America would be destroyed this year. We are near the end of the hurricane season, and I think our media was greatly disappointed that we have had no tropical storm catastrophes as of yet.

As I recall, it seems that during some unusually slow news periods, the media dredged up the possibility of an asteroid or comet hitting the earth. One of the networks had a special series depicting the numerous ways that life on earth could be cataclysmically ended.

I have asked myself why the fascination of our news media on such fearful topics? I think one reason is the dissatisfaction of the majority of the media with our present government and administration. Maybe they want to create fear, so that somehow either the present administration could be blamed for the fearful possibilities, or hinted to be unconcerned and unable to protect America from them. I had almost decided that must be the case, and then, out of the blue, maybe the true crux of the issue.

It dawned on me that we may be seeing a natural result of years of secular humanism that has been taught in our schools and colleges, and may form the foundation for the worldview that has been preached and propagated by our media. From Hollywood to New York, movie sets to newsrooms, it may be that the majority of those in power there tend to not believe in a creator designed and controlled universe. From what they tend to report, and how they portray religion, especially the Judeo/Christian type, I think that is probably the case.

When a person has become firmly convinced that there is no God; that our existence here on this planet is just a lucky happenstance of evolution, then it must become a very fearful world indeed. Humanity hangs by a thread. We never know what event may be about to wipe us all out. A comet, an asteroid, global warming, pandemic, anything could happen and eventually will. If mankind controls his destiny and no creator exists as humanism professes, then we must learn to control the forces that threaten our existence. We need a vaccine for every flu, we need to control the weather, we need a defense against rogue meteors, asteroids, and comets. And what are we to do about those pesky solar flares. And what if the sun starts to burn out before we have colonized other solar systems? Its enough to worry a newsperson to death.

Adoption Update 11/02/06

Adoption Update. Today the CCAA (China Center for Adoption Affairs) posted on their website that they have completed matches (matching a child up with a family's dossier) through August 25, 2005 LID (Log In Date). We are pretty excited about this news since it indicates a slight increase in the number of matches made over the past six to twelve months.

For those of you who do not know our LID is December 9, 2005. We were approved to adopt May 7, 2005 and began the process of getting our Dossier ready to send to China. We will share a little more about the process as time goes on. When we were approved the wait time from LID to Match was 6 months. During the past year the wait time from LID to Match has increased to about 14 months. The wait has been hard especially at our age...! Whatever happens we know when the time is right we will be matched up with the little girl the Lord has already chosen for us.

Sorry we cannot post the cute little box from the CCAA website, but we have not yet figured out how to accomplish that. May need to ask one of the grandsons!!!!!!!!!!!

Bumble Bees and Robots

There are very few things that we dislike about Wolfhill but one is the lack of little children coming to knock at our door on October 31 each year. This year we plan to go into town to Bethany and Jeff's home so that we can give away lots of candy and see all the cute little ones in their costumes. This picture is of two of our grandsons Bradley and Ben. It was taken several years ago Bradley is now 12 and Ben is 11. Aren't they just the cutest bumble bees you have ever seen? We sure thought so! Ronnie has written a story about one of his favorite Halloween memories. All the grandchildren love Ronnie's stories so much that we have decided to make them available to others in the future.

"The Reluctant Robot"

I remember Halloween when we lived in town back in the late fifties. I was four years old and Uncle Leonard and Aunt Dorothy lived three houses south of us. They had four boys. Gene and Larry were in their teens and Robert and Max were nine and seven years old respectively. Robert and Max embarked before sundown carrying medium sized paper sacks and wearing cowboy costumes with hats and pistols in holsters around their waists. When they returned about half an hour later, the sacks were completely full. It was more candy than I had ever seen in one place at one time. I couldn't wait to go out and get my share.

Aunt Dorothy, who was always quick to get into the spirit of anything, had bought a robot costume for me. Robots were a hot item at about that time, but her boys were not interested in being robots, they were cowboys. Robert and Max had emptied their sacks and were getting ready to go out again. I don't know if they were going to the same houses again, or were going into new neighborhoods, but I do remember they they came back after dark with two more full sacks of treats.

The plan was for me to go with them , but I was having trouble walking like a robot. Aunt Dorothy assured me that the costume was only effective if I walked like a real robot. I had never seen a real robot before, and I don't really think Aunt Dorothy had. She had seen enough however to give me several demonstrations. She would hold her arms out in front of her and holding her legs stiff and straight, start walking slowly down the sidewalk. She would then stop and say"now you do it, just like that". I would give it a try, but I was not quite getting it.

Robert and Max saw right away that traveling with a robot was going to slow them down way too much, so they made a break for it, and I was left to trick or treat with Aunt Dorothy. We made our way down the length of the street. A very short robot strolling casually beside a grown woman walking stiff legged, with arms outstretched. I came in a while later with a haul of three popcorn balls, half a dozen pieces of gum, and about ten pieces of candy. I didn't think that robots were going to replace cowboys any time soon.

Aunt Dorothy is eighty four years old now. She is still full of life, and enjoys her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. Someone remarked recently that it looks like she wants to live forever. I said yes she does, and not because she is afraid of dying, but because she loves living.

This is a picture of Ronnie and his sister Doris with their parents James and Barbara at about the time they moved to Wolfhill. We love this picture. We plan to try and post a lot of pictures from the past with a little bit of family history.

Aren't our 3 daughters beautiful? They were raised here on Wolfhill. Misty, Wade, Carmen, and John now have homes here and are raising our 5 grandchildren on this little farm. Bethany and Jeff live in a beautiful home in town and spend time here with us often.

You can expect the unexpected on Wolfhill. Just when it looked like we were settling in as full time grandparents we now find ourselves preparing to welcome another daughter into our family. We are adopting a precious little girl from China.
